THE MINIATURE BULL TERRIER CLUB
HEALTH SCHEME RECOMMENDATIONS

THE MINIATURE BULL TERRIER CLUB RECOMMENDS STRONGLY THAT IT'S MEMBERS HEALTH TEST ALL THEIR BREEDING STOCK PRIOR TO MATING AS FOLLOWS;

1. A heart test performed by a cardiologist- should be no more than a grade 1/6 heart murmur. If higher than this the MBTC strongly recommends that the animal is not bred from.

2. A kidney test - urine/creatinine ratio - this should be less than 0.3. The MBTC strongly recommends that no animal be bred from with a result more than this.

3. KC/BVA eye test for PLL - the MBTC strongly recommends that all dogs and bitches are tested by a BVA specialist ophthalmologist or equivalent within 6 months prior to mating and be passed currently unaffected. The MBTC strongly recommend that no animal be bred from if it does not pass this test.

DNA Test for PLL the MBTC also recommends that the Dam/Sire and all puppies are DNA tested (puppies can be tested after being weaned 48 hours) All Miniature Stock used in the Interbreeding programme should be tested clear and that All MBT’s not DNA PLL ‘clear’ be tested regularly after the age of 3 yrs. It is strongly recommended that the following combinations should not be used in breeding programmes; Affected to Affected, Affected To Carrier, Carrier to Carrier.

The MBTC recommends BAER testing for bilateral hearing. This is a condition known in Bull Terriers and to a lesser degree in Miniature Bull Terriers, but there is no scientific data to make conclusions regarding the incidence in MBTC. However, the MBTC support all health testing and therefore it is something we wish to support at the discretion of the member.

4. The MBTC supports patella testing. This is a condition known in Bull Terriers and to a lesser degree in Miniature Bull Terriers, but there is no scientific data to make conclusions regarding the incidence in MBTC. However, the MBTC support all health testing and therefore it is something we wish to support at the discretion of the member.

5. Attention! Members should abide by the KC Code of Ethics/rules on breeding.

6. The MBTC recommend that all breeders consider joining the KC Accredited Breeder's scheme.

7. MBTC members are advised that they should pay particular attention to the health and welfare of the breed, including all of the above, when considering matings and should also attempt to avoid producing inverted canines, skin problems, and in particular great attention should be given to avoiding temperament problems.

8. Members are required to submit data regarding any health problem to the Health Officer Email Greta Van Eck to enable the Club to compile an accurate picture of the current and up to date state of health of the Miniature Bull Terrier.
